ARTEFACTS

Artefacts2_EnTete.jpg

Artifacts are anomalies that appear during electronic processes in different fields (meteorology, medical imaging, synthesis techniques). These anomalies are quite fascinating in that they are not predicted by the initial experiment and have unique characteristics. Generally, in the scientific field, we look for methods to eliminate artifacts because these parasitic elements have a jamming effect. In this project, on the contrary, I searched to highlight all these phenomena to create a very dense and very unstable sound environment.
Composed for the Lange/Berwerck/Lorenz trio, this piece uses 3 types of sound materials:
- analog synthesis sounds which have many artifacts
- noisy sounds and textures (machines, environments, percussions) which are also complex to listen to
- radio fragments (voices and radio noises) also parasitized
The main idea is to mix these sources into a series of textures, regularly interrupted by a brief sound or a short silence. At times, the music stabilizes on more conventional elements (harmonic colors, rhythmic sequences) but a kind of uncontrollable energy seems to dominate everything. One aspect of this work consists of producing very complex phenomena where listening is forced to choose certain elements. A bit as if the artifacts had invaded the system in a sort of general proliferation.
